Joy and I both like to have FUN. Let Joy be your guide so the publishing process doesn’t have to be so serious—other than you’ll seriously get a lot done.
— ANNIE F. DOWNS, NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING AUTHOR

GET TO THE PUBLISHING PUNCHLINE

As a literary agent there are specific things I look for that show me immediately how seriously a writer takes their goals of getting published.

Even though the first steps of writing and figuring out how to get a book into the world can feel daunting, I want to not only give you everything you need for an incredible proposal, but demystify the publishing process, tell you how to market yourself authentically (and enjoyably), and cheer you on with practical next steps as you decide which publishing route is best for you.

And I want to make this whole process FUN.

This is an upbeat 30-day guide with easy to follow examples, stories, and funny illustrations (that you're more than welcome to color in because your brain will need a break), as well as insider knowledge about how to catch an agent's eye, how to land your dream endorsement and how to wildly increase your chances of getting a book deal.

Non-fiction, memoir, or novel—this book will help authors (especially first-timers) who have questions and feel alone in the writing process. Let me be your (slightly aggressive) friend who will encourage you, tell you what to do, and leave you feeling oh-so-confident because of all the progress you've made. I PROMISE you will close the last page and involuntarily shout, "WOW, I did that!"

You’ll also get to know way more about my personal life than you probably wanted.

what others are saying:

Publishing is a journey marked by hard work and often high reward, but it’s never easy, and it makes all the difference to have good guides. Consider this a guide you can trust. Joy breaks down every step of the process and empowers you on your way.
— Stephanie Duncan Smith, senior editor for Baker Books
A must-have resource in making your book dreams into published realities. Joy is an invaluable guide and the literary coach you want in your corner. She’s one of the main reasons I’m a published author today.
— Scott Erickson, author of Honest Advent and Say Yes
Joy is the book proposal guru you’ve been waiting for. I can’t even begin to explain how helpful this book would have been at the beginning of my writing and publishing journey! Let Joy be your guide!
— Tiffany Bluhm, author of Prey Tell
If you want to put a book out into the world but don’t know where to start, this is the guide you need! Full of information and loaded with witty quips to keep you entertained while you get the scoop on all things writing and publishing from one of the best literary agents in the business.
— Kristin and Danny Adams, authors of The Road to Love and Laughter
Let me tell you this—you will NOT read a book about writing and publishing that will be as helpful and funny and awesome as Joy’s. Not only is she seasoned and so helpful and wise, but man this book is just plain fun to read! Handing this to all aspiring authors from now on!
— Jefferson Bethke, NYT best selling author
Listen. Maybe there are books out there that will teach you how to write a book proposal, but I’m willing to bet none that will make it feel like you’ve got a straight-shooting, cheerleading bestie by your side every step of the way. This part of the book writing journey is hard. (I found it to be more challenging than actually writing the book!) But you CAN have some fun along the way. And if you don’t hate fun AND getting ish done, read this book.
— Liz Forkin Bohannon, CEO of Sseko Designs and author of Beginner's Pluck
The book writing process was incredibly helpful to understand my voice, understand what resonated with audiences as a speaker, and identify the stories I wanted and needed to tell. Joy’s book will help you not only as a writer, but as an overall communicator!
— Terri Broussard Williams, author of Find Your Fire
An extremely helpful book that provides tools to help writers understand their process, as well as exercises to get the writing process rolling. Joy’s voice is distinct and conversational, while her humor brings a sense of comfort for something that can feel so overwhelming even before pen hits paper or fingers hit keys. This book is not only good for the literary world, but also very helpful to me as a songwriter.
— Liz Vice, singer and songwriter
So much “how-to” or “DIY” advice comes without the accessibility, cleverness, and expertise that characterizes Joy’s book. Her years of experience as a writer herself, as well as in relationship with countless authors, shows up in this book. It is helpful and kind and empowering. If you’re wanting to put your words in the world, you should read this.
— Justin McRoberts, author of It Is What You Make of It
